Today the long awaited and talked about AI Act has made its official debut, by way of publication in the Official Journal of the EU. It enters into force on 1 August 2024, although it will apply in full two years on (from 2 August 2026), with some of its provisions applying earlier, namely the crucial ones on prohibited AI practices applying from 2 February 2025 and other mainly institutional in nature from 2 August 2025. An exception in the exception is the delayed application until 2 August 2027 of the provisions concerning the classification of AI systems as high-risk when intended to be used as safety components under art. 6.1.

The scenario is all the most complex. Our firm has been closely following the evolution of the AI Act and its ramifications and narratives since the beginning. Our colleague Agnès Kwiatkowski, PhD has prepared this brief highlight of the main components of the AI Act, as a reminder and a call of action to anyone (indeed virtually everyone) interested or affected by AI technologies.
